Transmission selection
Once we determined that we were going the SRT4 swap route the next big question was how do we get the power to the ground. It was decided early on that the only choice was an automatic transmission. Luckily we found that there were already adapter plates being made to marry the 2.4L turbo engine from the SRT4 with the rear wheel drive Chrysler 904 transmission. They had previously been created to swap the SRT4 engines into older sport compacts but would work just as well for what we were doing. With an easy solution for bolting the engine and transmission together the next major hurdle to overcome was coming up with a torque converter. Converter specs:
- Based on Dodge Colt design
- 904 internals Bolts to Neon 2.0 flexplate
- 3200ish Stall speed
Hooking up the transmission to the transfer case was a piece of cake. The 904 transmission is essentially the exact same as the Jeep’s 30RH (bellhousing is the only difference) so we just had to swap over the transfer case adapter and everything bolted right up.
If there was anything that could be improved on this setup it would be the addition of overdrive.
